Tesla announced Standard base variants of the Model 3 sedan and the Model Y SUV.

The Model 3 and Model Y Standard exchange some features and capabilities for price tags thousands below the previous entry-level trims.

As of this writing (prices can change quickly), the Model 3 Standard starts at $38,630, with the Model Y Standard not far behind at $41,630.

At a time when it feels like everything is getting more expensive by the hour, it's refreshing to see an automaker roll out more affordable models. That's exactly what happened in Texas this week, with Tesla announcing a new Standard base variant for its compact EVs, the Model 3 and Model Y.

The new models also introduce a mild rejiggering of Tesla's trim-naming convention. Now that the Standard models occupy the entry level, the cars formerly known as Long Range are now called Premium. The Performance remains at the top of the pile—but anybody can pad margins and build an expensive car. Let's see what Tesla had to do to bring prices down rather than send them up.

COMMENTS

- If the same price difference applies to the EU the Model 3 without Tax here in Germany would be 28.200 € which is an insanely good deal for small business owners! Model Y at 31.500 € net. (+19 % MwSt in for private)

- This is so disappointing They reduced the price by 5k while removing the features worth 10-15k. They cut features from every single corner of the car I bet tesla will be making lots of lots of money from the standard models

- I tried so hard to get a Model Y. I did everything I could, and my son ghosted me. I needed him. I know what it's like to be abandoned by someone you really loved. Maybe it's a right of passage. I would love to debrief. I'm so sold on Tesla and The Boring Company. I'm in for the win with the promise of Freedom Cities and all that comes with them. Shout out to PsyTech who probably has 280,000 miles on his Model Y. I'm not giving up, but I'm stuck. I don't stop trying to find way.

- I was gonna ride on the "this needs to be cheaper train" which I agree with, but I hope they make it their goal to keep making it more aesthetic and less bare-looking inside while decreasing the price overtime. If that's the case, I'm happy they're doing this. If not, I too will feel like this is pointless.

- I'm a big Tesla fan and also a big fan of responsible environmental policy and renewable energy, but this ain't the new model 95% of fans/analysts/investors wanted to see. Tesla, it's far past time to release an actual, _real_, new model.
