Volvo has published press releases announcing the revival of the Volvo XC70 nameplate for the 2026 model year as a new, long-range plug-in hybrid SUV for the Chinese and European markets.
New Volvo XC70 Plug-In Hybrid SUV
The new 2026 Volvo XC70 is a mid-size luxury SUV, not a station wagon like its predecessor, and is designed to bridge the gap between the existing XC60 and XC90 models.
Powertrain and Range:
It is offered as a plug-in hybrid only, with two configurations: a front-wheel-drive model and an all-wheel-drive model. The latter features a large 39.6 kWh battery pack and offers an all-electric driving range of up to 124 miles (200 km) on the CLTC cycle, which makes it Volvo's longest-range PHEV to date. The AWD model produces a combined 462 horsepower.
Technology:
The interior is minimalist and features a 15.4-inch horizontal center touchscreen with Google built-in services, along with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an optional 92-inch augmented reality head-up display.
Market Availability: The XC70 was launched first in China, where production has already begun, and Volvo plans to introduce it in Europe at a later stage. Volvo officials have stated that an American release is unlikely in its current form due to import tariffs.
Updates to Other 2026 Models For other 2026 models in its lineup, Volvo has announced several updates:
Volvo V90 Cross Country: For 2026, the V90 Cross Country is available only in the high-end "Ultra" trim level, as the "Plus" trim has been discontinued. Newly standard features include Nappa leather upholstery, a head-up display, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.
Volvo XC60:
The 2026 XC60 receives an upgraded grille design, new wheel options, new paint colors (including Aurora Silver), and a larger 11.2-inch center touchscreen. Volvo EX90:
The flagship electric SUV sees major upgrades, including a switch to an 800-volt electrical architecture for faster charging, capable of adding up to 155 miles of range in just 10 minutes at a compatible station.

- Tomorrow I get a 2003 Volvo XC70. It only has 112K miles on it and looks well maintained. I'm a little scared cause I don't know much about cars. Wish me luck.- Keeping track of the Maxiecu output values has been a great addition to the test, thank you! This goes to show how an essentially identical vehicle with different AWD systems treats different wheel slip situations completely differently (along with the limitations of a viscous coupling to sending torque to the rear axle in this case). I know this is a bit off-topic for this channel, but I really wish you were a sort of independent car review channel like Marek to also hear your personal opinions of the vehicles you test.
- What we see here, is that the average driver, is not going to notice any difference in practice. We have an xc70 2005. Has it been great on long drives - absolutely. Has the AWD helped - absolutely. Is it an off road vehicle - no. If you find yourself in a situation where only 1 wheel has traction, then you have already messed up, and should not be there. Is the AWD going to save you - probably not.
