It is intended to replace the aging Mk88A Sea Lynx fleet, giving the German Navy a modern platform for anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare while also being capable of reconnaissance, transport, and search and rescue support.

Germany’s Bundestag approved a €2.7 billion contract in November 2020 for 31 Sea Tigers. The first aircraft successfully flew on 30 November 2023 at Airbus Helicopters’ Donauwörth site. A major campaign to qualify its mission systems took place between February and April 2024 in Marignane, France, validating its sonar suite, sonobuoy deployment, torpedo carriage, and the integration of MBDA’s MARTE ER anti-ship missile. Operational demonstrations are scheduled at the German Navy’s Nordholz base in 2024, with deliveries expected to begin in late 2025.

The Sea Tiger is equipped with the Thales FLASH SONICS dipping sonar, advanced sonobuoy systems, electro-optical sensors, and upgraded electronic support measures. These allow it to detect, track, and classify underwater and surface threats. For offensive capability, it can deploy torpedoes against submarines and carry long-range MARTE ER missiles to strike surface vessels. The helicopter’s systems are designed to work seamlessly with German frigates, making it an integral extension of the ship’s sensor and weapons network.

The NH90 family consists of two main variants: the Tactical Transport Helicopter (TTH), optimised for land-based missions, and the NATO Frigate Helicopter (NFH), tailored for naval operations. The Sea Tiger is a dedicated German version of the NFH. More than 500 NH90 helicopters have already been produced worldwide, with over 370,000 flight hours logged, and the Sea Tiger builds on this operational legacy by tailoring its mission systems to Germany’s maritime defense needs.

- Problem of dipping sonar is that the missile can trace back and hit the crew. Dropping wireless submersible sonar may be used by any type of air vehicle and even cheap drone
- reminds me of the Seahawk used in a Belgian show couple years ago. called "Windkracht 10" Best intro song btw xD
- Meanwhile, I do not support military expenditures, because I don't think anything in the nation should be placed ahead of the rest, as nations were built on mutual trust and equal benefits. It would be cool if there were objects that are being dropped from planes like this one into the ocean that could detect and potentially warn the nation if an unauthorized drill or submarine was nearby, potentially calling underwater drones with live warheads to eliminate threats if necessary, automatically without notifications.
