The original Renault 5 was released in the 1970s, but it went out of production way back in 1996. However, it’s now been resurrected in the form of an EV! The question, does the new Renault 5 do justice to the legacy of its predecessors? Let’s take a closer look…

Starting with the exterior design, there’s no denying that Renault has got it bang on! It’s modern yet retro, with several design cues taken from the design of the original Renault 5. Along the side, you get contrasting side mirrors and skirts, and there are different colour roofs available as well! At the back, there are contoured tail lights and fake vents that harp back to the Turbo 2.

The retro-modern style continues through to the interior. There’s a dual digital dial-infotainment screen on the dash that looks smart and integrated, while there’s a striped design across the rest of the dash to help give it some definition. There may be some hard, scratchy plastics within the cabin, but you have to remember this is still an entry-level car. Thankfully, there’s also a selection of physical buttons on the centre console! The seats not only look retro and cool, but they’re comfortable as well!

There are two power output choices for the Renault 5. The entry-level is the Urban, which delivers 120hp, 225Nm, and has a claimed 0-60 time of 9 seconds. It also has a claimed range of up to 190 miles. Then we have the Comfort, which delivers 150hp, 245Nm, and a 0-60 time of 7.9 seconds. The claimed range of this edition is 248 miles.

The entry-level Renault 5 starts at £23,000, rising to £29,000 for the range-topping edition. So is it the best small electric car you can buy for under £30,000? You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

- Looks like a awesome little hothatch! Backseat- or trunkspace is probably something you dont expect to get a lot of buying a car of this size. Perfect cityhopper for a family with schoolage kids.

- Why are Chinese manufacturers the true leaders and experts in interior space management and design—especially when it comes to rear-seat room and cargo space? Cars such as JAC EX30, Geely EX2, Neo firefly Dongfeng Nammi Box, MG3, BYD Dolphin, GWM ORA 03, Chery QQ3, and VW ID.3 all offer noticeably superior front and rear interior space, larger and more practical cargo areas, higher horsepower, more advanced technology, longer driving range, and significantly better value for money.

This is particularly striking given that all of these vehicles are built on nearly the same wheelbase. Despite that, the Chinese models consistently deliver more usable space, better performance, richer technology, and longer range at a much more competitive price.

- Those of us in America are forever suffering (for many reasons these days) but mostly because we don't get to buy EUROPE's SMALL CARS!!
