Ferrari unveiled the Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale, a limited-edition special series of the Ferrari 12Cilindri that opens up a new way of experiencing the purest expression of Ferrari’s DNA, placing the relationship between driver input, mechanics and control at the heart of the driving experience. Designed for those seeking a physical and engaging experience behind the wheel without compromising on usability, the car combines the driving emotions typical of Ferrari Gran Turismo models from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s with the most advanced contemporary technology, aiming to make the interaction between driver and car even more direct.

The lever-operated Manuale By-Wire system was developed with the aim of combining an analogue experience with the latest technology. The system pairs the highly acclaimed 8-speed dual-clutch transmission with a dedicated architecture and entirely new components. This enables manual gear changes whilst maintaining functional consistency with the powertrain. The components include the manual gear lever, the control panel, and a specially redesigned pedal assembly featuring a clutch-by-wire pedal; in addition, the vehicle control unit and gearbox software have been updated to precisely manage the new interactions. The engine and transmission remain unchanged, reinforcing a design philosophy that concentrates innovation on the interface and the quality of the physical interaction.

Ferrari has brought back the gated manual — but the new 12Cilindri Manuale is not quite what it first appears to be.

In this static reveal, Tom Baker takes you through the Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale, a new V12 supercar that pairs the brand’s 6.5-litre naturally aspirated engine with a six-speed manual-by-wire system layered over the regular eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

It looks like a classic Ferrari manual, complete with an anodised aluminium gated shifter, clutch pedal and six forward gears. But there is no conventional mechanical manual gearbox here: the clutch and shifter send electronic signals to the car’s transmission control unit, while seventh and eighth gears remain automatic-only.

Ferrari says this solution preserves the full 830hp output of the 12Cilindri rather than detuning the V12 for a traditional manual. The result is a fascinating, controversial and very expensive reinterpretation of the manual gearbox, complete with a heavy clutch, tactile shifter, money-shift prevention and the ability to stall or bunny-hop the car if driven poorly.

- think Ferrari has done a fantastic job here. Please don’t underestimate simulated and partially simulated H-pattern manuals. I don’t see them as simply copying traditional mechanical manuals—I think they have the potential to become something much bigger.

One of the biggest advantages is that they start reducing the traditional fragmentation between manual and automatic cars. Instead of forcing people to choose one transmission forever, drivers can choose the experience that suits them.

If you’re tired after work, after leg day at the gym, or simply want an easier drive, switch to automatic. If you want the enjoyment and involvement of shifting gears yourself, switch back to the H-pattern manual experience. Someone who’s never driven a manual before could even practise for 10 or 20 minutes at a time, then return to automatic whenever they want.

Ferrari isn’t alone either. Koenigsegg has explored a partially simulated H-pattern manual with the CC850, while Hyundai has shown what a fully simulated gear experience can feel like with the Ioniq 5 N and 6 N. Toyota and others are exploring similar ideas too. That tells me this isn’t just a gimmick—it looks like an emerging direction.

I’m also watching Xiaomi very closely. They haven’t introduced simulated H-pattern manuals, so I’m not saying they will. What interests me is their Human × Car × Home philosophy and their focus on modularity, software and customer choice. If that philosophy ever meets this kind of driving technology, I think it could make ideas like this more accessible over time.

Whether people end up preferring traditional manuals or simulated ones is a personal choice. But I genuinely believe this technology has far more potential than many people realise, and I think we’re only seeing the beginning. 👏😊

For a long time, many people assumed automatic transmissions would eventually replace manuals completely. I wasn’t convinced that would be the end of driver engagement. I thought it might simply evolve into a different form, and I think we’re now starting to see that with simulated and partially simulated H-pattern manuals.

The rise of automatics has been fantastic for accessibility. They make driving easier for many people, whether it’s because of physical needs, confidence, traffic or simply personal preference. That’s genuine progress.

What I never liked was the traditional fragmentation between manual and automatic cars, where you had to commit to one transmission for the life of the vehicle. Technologies like this begin to reduce that divide by letting drivers choose the experience that suits them at that moment.

Traditional manuals aren’t going to disappear overnight, and I don’t think they should. They’ll always have enthusiasts who love the purely mechanical experience. But I also think simulated and partially simulated H-pattern manuals open up possibilities that mechanical systems simply can’t offer because they’re software-driven. That’s why I don’t underestimate this technology—I think we’re only seeing the beginning.
