A custom, new Maserati MCXtrema unleashed on track | ShortsCars

There are collectors, and then there are custodians. Lifelong Maserati enthusiast, Jacques Sicotte is the latter. After a thrilling design journey with our Centro Stile, the moment to put his 740-CV #MaseratiMCXtrema through its paces arrived. Get an exclusive view into what those first laps on track are truly like. Unleashed at the legendary Circuit Paul Ricard and filmed by Bruno Ulbert, this is what happens when a masterpiece meets its purpose, that moment when Mr. Sicotte’s vision – a one-of-a-kind tribute to his historic MC12 – met its natural habitat.

INFO
Maserati recently unveiled a new take on its really rather impressive V6-engined supercar. Formerly known as Project24, the MCXtrema does exactly what it says on the tin – it’s the most extreme thing that Maserati could come up with using the bones of the MC20, and the 62 examples that are set to be built can only be used on track.

It drives pretty differently too. Not least because the 3.0-litre Nettuno V6 now has new, bigger turbos, a new intake and a different exhaust system for a total of 730bhp.

All that power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential gearbox and limited slip diff, and the MCXtrema only weighs around 1,300kg thanks to a liberal use of carbon fibre and the fact that there’s only one seat as standard in the race-spec cockpit.

Each of the 62 cars will be completely unique in its spec, costing just under £1 million. Not that it matters too much, because of course they’re all sold out already…

So, what's it like? Over to Top Gear’s Contributing Editor Jethro Bovingdon to explore the new MCXtrema on track...

During the recent test days organized by Kateyama at Misano Circuit, Maserati brought one of their new MCXtrema for a development session. The MCXtrema is an exclusive track-only toy which will be built in just 62 units, following the trend of many other supercars and hypercars manufacturers which provide an extreme track variant of their cars to be driven during scheduled track days and/or events.

Of course it's based on the Maserati MC20, more precisely from the MC20 GT2 as the Xtrema adopts many components of this racing version, but thanks to the intense use of carbon fiber and the removal of many unnecessary components the MCXtrema is over 250 kg lighter than the MC20, stopping the scale at 1,250 kg.

The Nettuno engine (a 3.0-liter twin-turbo, 90° V6) has been fitted with two new turbochargers, increasing the power output to 740hp, sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed sequential manual transmission paired with a mechanical limited slip differential.

- The trident tail lights must be the coolest design brand nod on the past decades. So subtle, yet so effective.

- 2 things I have to say about this. - Most of you folks complaining are driving cars that only have 4-6 cylinders and making only 200-300 horsepower. You don't know how much 730 really is when put down on the road. - You are forgetting that V6s don't have to be boring. The 1988 McLaren MP4/4 used a V6 engine. The 1992 Jaguar XJ220 used a V6. So did the Acura NSX, the Nissan GTR, and the Lancia Stratos. This car, like many before it, has a non-boring V6.

- Love how all these companies are making badass track focused beast for us. Mustang gtd this Maserati mc extrema Ford gt mark 4 the new c8 zr1 the Mercedes black series gtr loved the aston martin gt8 and gt12 the Vulcan the shelby gt350r sounded and looked amazing. Loving all these cars. Now I just need a pay raise 😂😂

- What a car, absolutely outstanding design. Love a unique design, esp features you don't really see anywhere else ie. that front especially. The utter balls to try and pull something like this off instead of playing it safe with a more conventional style, and than absolutely Nailing it, is next level

- I'd love to see Jethro, Ollie Marriage, Chris Harris and Henry Catchpole all working together. They're the best four auto journalists around, in my eyes.

- I wish all these track day specials could actually race competitively since you know, they’re made by manufacturers and are built as race cars. That’s too much to ask for though I guess
